GARY ST. MARTIN
In concert with
The Amazing Rhythm Aces
Spearfish, South Dakota, with Kenny Miller,
Dean Holtberg, and Gary St. Martin.
Gary St. Martin first came to the Black Hills while traveling on the road with Hammond B3 organist TONY KAYE. They were booked into Bob's Modern Bar, a dance club on Main St. in downtown Rapid City. Soon after that gig was over, he made Rapid City, and The Black Hills, his home for several years, working at Bob's Modern Bar for three and a half years, where he lead several groups playing with many members of the
West River Musician's Association Local 686,
including the Kinzler brothers, bassist Dale Kinzler, saxophonist, Dane Kinzler, and pianist Derick Kinzler, the guitarist Denny Fredrickson, vocalist Denny Hubbard, an organist Jerry Kaplin, and several other musician's and dancers.
While working at Bob's Modern Bar, Gary opened a small music store on Main St. called Jambo Drum Shop where he taught drum lessons and sold the Gretsch Drum line. He played at Don Hall's Supper Club, The Canyon Lake Club, and traveled on the road to Montana, and played locally in Rapid City with his band, Owl Creek Rush, which included Dave Kramer on bass.
Cosmic Storm, Gary's Rapid City Avant Garde jazz group, which included Dale Kinzler on bass, and Dane Kinzler on sax, performed two concerts at The Rainbow Pancake House. Recordings of these concerts were taken to New York City and reviewed by the great Jazz saxophonist Pharaoh Sanders, which resulted in several gigs for Gary with Archie Shepp, Sugar Blue, Jerome Van Jones, and Gabor Zabo in Europe, New York City, and San Francisco. Gary then returned to his home state of California to attend California State University Chico and received a degree in Archaeology. He then returned to The Black Hills, and was residing in Deadwood, when Kenny Miller asked Gary to play a concert with THE AMAZING RHYTHM ACES in Spearfish. The trio featured Kenny on bass , the gifted young guitarist Dean Holtberg, and Gary on drums as the opening band.
Following that concert, Gary continued playing in Kenny Miller's band, with Kenny on bass, Gary on drums, Singlejim Fredrickson on electric mandolin, and Dean Holtberg on lead guitar, and once with guest star Bruce Williams, of William's and Ree.
During this period, Gary also played with Zukarian, a successful jazz group from Rapid City which included once again, Dave Kramer on bass. Since his departure, Gary has remained in touch with many of these great musicians from The Black Hills, many of whom are now his long time friends. Gary hopes to return in the near future to The Black Hills to once again continue his musical career there.
